2022 FOOTBALL WRAPUP: Bedrock’s Final Power 5s And Consensus Top 10

—–

Hawaii high school football season came to a close last weekend with Kahuku, Konawaena and Waimea securing state championship victories in Open, Division I and Division II.

As expected, those teams finished at the top of Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s Power 5s in voting from media personnel from around the state.

Three teams entered the Power 5s since the last update before the state tournament — Saint Louis (in yet another flip-flop with Kapolei), Kapaa and King Kekaulike. The latter squad made it into the rankings for the first time all season due to their rise to an appearance and eventual loss to Waimea in the D-II state title game.

Aside from the Hurricanes, the two other teams dropping out of the rankings were Lahainaluna and Kamehameha-Hawaii.

  • Congrats to all champions well deserved.
My thoughts on the top ten. With 3teirs hard to determine the real top ten. One division would solve that.

    5.St.Lou

    10.Aiea

    • Thanks for the comment and thanks for reading!!

Yes, agreed, it’s hard to determine a Top 10 with three tiers.

  • Konawaena waas a big surprise. They out played a bigger physical team with speed and quickness.

    • I was not surprised. However, I would not have been surprised if Waipahu won. I truly believe it could have gone either way. And yes, Konawaena did outplay the bigger, more physical team. Every year, the Oahu-centric thinking is that the OIA champions are going to beat the Neighbor Island teams. But history says the opposite is true more often. It took a long time this season for voters to put Konawaena into the Top 10 because of a perceived weak schedule. Thanks for your comment and thanks for reading!!
