Kapolei and Leilehua won OIA football playoff games Friday night to advance.
The sixth-ranked Hurricanes defeated Moanalua 68-33 and will be at top-ranked Kahuku next week in the league’s Open semifinals.
The Mules topped Radford 43-14 and move on to play at Waipahu in the league’s D-I semifinals.
Elsewhere on Friday:
>> King Kekaulike kept pace with Kamehameha-Maui in MIL Division II by beating Maui High 34-30. Na Alii and the Warriors are tied with 5-1 records and so the league’s state D-II berth will be decided when the two teams meet at KS-Maui next Friday.
>> Kalani upended Kalaheo 30-14 in a makeup game of a postponement a few weeks ago when a scheduling conflict led to not enough officials on hand.
Big Island Postseason Situation
Usually, the BIIF D-I and D-II overall titles and state berths are decided by championship games between the top two finishers in the regular-season standings.
It might only happen in D-I this year, when regular-season champ Konawaena hosts Keaau next Saturday.
Even though Hilo can finish tied with Keaau for second place at 5-3 with a win at Waiakea on Saturday (today), the Vikings were eliminated from contention. The Cougars and Vikings won a game apiece head to head, but Keaau had the better point differential.
In Division II, if second place Hawaii Prep wins Saturday (today) at home against first-place Kamehameha-Hawaii, then there will be a championship game next Friday. But if the undefeated Warriors win Saturday, they will clinch the championship.
That second scenario where KS-Hawaii clinches early is because the league officials decided two wins head-to-head will suffice and that playing another game after a grueling 10-game regular season is asking too much of the athletes. D-I, on the other hand, only plays eight regular-season games.
Honokaa, which could finish tied with Hawaii Prep at 7-3 in the regular-season was eliminated from contention after going 1-1 head-to-head against Ka Makani and losing on point differential.
