CHAMPIONSHIP TIME: ILH Title Meet And OIA Divisional Brackets; And Kaianne Sabagala Is A Utah State Champ

Are you ready for some championship wrestling?

Tonight (Friday, Feb. 18), the first of the two-day OIA East and West divisional championships are being held at Mililani and Kaiser. (Pearl City is no longer hosting the West).

On Saturday, those two tournaments wrap up on the same day as the ILH Championships are being held at Kamehameha.

The brackets for all three tournaments are below. Wrestlers’ won-lost records this season are in parentheses when available.

First, some wrestling news and other thoughts:

>> If anyone has quality video or still photos of important matches from here until the end of the season, you can submit them via Google Drive for possible publication on Bedrock Sports Hawaii to Nick Abramo at [email protected].

>> The next pound-for-pound rankings will be posted sometime between Saturday, Feb. 26 (when the OIA, KIF, MIL and BIIF league championships will be completed) and Thursday, March 3 (the day before the first of the two-day state tournament). Then, about a week or so after states, the year’s final p4p rankings will be posted. For coaches wanting to make their case for a certain wrestler, email Nick Abramo at [email protected]. Ballots for the final rankings will be sent to all head coaches after the state tournament. All input is welcome.

>> Former Kahuku wrestler Kaianne Sabagala won the Utah state championship 130-pound class on Thursday. Sabagala, who goes to Timpview High, was a two-time state qualifier in Hawaii.

>> As you will see in the brackets below, Campbell’s Anissa Wright and Kapolei’s Kaui Lee-Tynan, both of whom were in the p4p rankings earlier this season and who beat each other this season, are not facing each other in the West Division championships. Wright is at 140 (with the 2-pound allowance) and Lee-Tynan is at 147. Wright was the state runner-up at 145 in 2020.

>> You know the type, right? Although he is not a favorite to win a title, Punahou senior Oliver Nishikawa has been a very valuable competitor for Yoshi Honda’s Buffanblu squad.

“Oliver is just one those kids, working hard in the practice room,” Honda said. “He’s there every day and has been captain for the last two years. He’s a big leader for us and he works harder than anybody else. He’s present all the time and you know that’s all you can ask. We’re hoping that adds up and that maybe he’ll find himself wrestling Saturday night (for a 138-pound state title).”

>> Traven Wailehua, a Kamehameha junior, isn’t wrestling this season due to an ACL injury suffered during the Warriors’ football season. But he is getting a lot interest from college coaches. Wailehua, who many know as “Baba,” is hoping to run track, where he is ranked as a top sprinter, this spring.

Among the interested colleges (who are also waiting to see how Wailehua progresses with his rehab) are Simpson, San Francisco State, York, Colby Covington and the University of Providence.

According to Timmy Wailehua, Traven’s dad, at an Iowa camp, Hawkeyes wrestling coach Tom Brands called Traven “fast and strong.” At that camp, Traven received a ranking of eighth best out of 40 participants.
