Just when you thought we had COVID-19 on its heels, it strikes again.
The Molokai Farmers were expected to come over to Oahu this week to participate in the Atlas Insurance Agency/HHSAA Judo State Championships, but that is not going to happen.
According to a source close to the situation, all members of the Molokai judo team have come down with the COVID-19 virus and will stay home instead of coming to the competition on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center for safety reasons.
The Farmers were initially going to have six seeded judoka and four alternates (on a list in case someone dropped out) here for the tournament.
After hearing about this development, Bedrock Sports Hawaii contacted Rick Williams, one of the tournament committee members. He’s usually in charge of creating and updating the brackets, among other things.
“It’s always sad when an athlete is injured or sick and cannot compete in an important event like the state tournament,” Williams said. “So when a whole team is unable to compete like this, it’s really sad for not only the athletes but also their families and even the school, especially in a tight-knit community like Molokai. I hope that everyone recovers quickly without complications. They will be missed.”
Replacements for the Molokai athletes will be from the alternate list and will be from the Maui Interscholastic League, if possible.
“Scratches are always an issue in judo,” Willians said. “There are always a number of injuries in practice the week of the tournament. We are usually able to fill the vacancies within the affected league, but we also have a rotation for the other leagues’ players, so we can use them, too. If the spot still goes unfilled, then we use byes. Historically, the smaller and larger weight classes are the most problematic. Luckily there is probably only one weight class, Boys 220, that will need a bye.”
Brackets (version 5, as of Thursday night) are below. Bedrock Sports Hawaii plans to run updated brackets on Friday night as well.
