Hawaii’s Grant Nakamura won the U.S. Open national championship in the 70kg Masters B Division in Las Vegas earlier this week.
Nakamura, a Baldwin alumnus, won three matches en route to the Greco-Roman title. By virtue of the victory, he qualified for the Veterans World Championships in Greece in October, according to the Hawaii Federation of USA Wrestling.
Nakamura was a three-time state placer in high school, capturing the 125-pound state title in 2001. In college at Iowa State, he won 44 matches and was a three-time NCAA qualifier.
Also at the U.S. Open, Nakamura placed fourth in 70kg, Masters B freestyle.
Some others from Hawaii placed in the U.S. Open Masters Division B — Lean Gumboc (second in 62kg Masters B, Greco-Roman; sixth in Freestyle) and David Crooke (fifth in 70kg, Masters B Greco-Roman). Also, according to HFUSAW, Nalu Scott took fifth place, but the division he participated in is unclear.
The U.S. Open continued throughout the weekend with other Hawaii wrestlers taking part. Bedrock hopes to have updates of any placers.
