Moanalua, Kapolei And Mililani Rise to OIA Divisional Wrestling Championships

The Kapolei boys wrestling team was a slim winner in the OIA West Championships on Saturday at Mililani.

The Hurricanes scored 176 points, with Waianae in second place at 174.5. But the closeness didn’t stop there. Campbell (165.5) placed third, followed by Mililani (162) and Leilehua (143.5).

That’s pretty balanced.

Kinau McBrayer, shown wrestling at a tournament on the mainland, helped Kapolei to the boys team victory at the OIA West Championships on Saturday at Mililani by taking the title in the 140-pound class with a 4-3 decision over Aiea’s Gabriel Grilho.

On the girls side in the West, Mililani was a big winner with 177 points. Campbell, the Trojans’ closest competitor, ended with 125 points.

In the OIA East Championships at Kaiser, Moanalua ran away with the girls title with 244 points, and Kahuku was way back in second place with 93 points. On the boys side, Moanalua proved to be the strongest with 181 points, and Na Menehune were followed in order by Kalani with 167.5 and Castle with 110.

Eight Bedrock p4p Wrestlers Take OIA Individual Division Championships

Three girls and five boys who are in Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s Top 10 pound-for-pound rankings wrestled to OIA divisional titles on Saturday.

They are (from the East): No. 5 Blaze Sumiye of Moanalua (160), No. 7 Karter Nitahara of Moanalua (184), No. 9 Isabelle Asuncion of Moanalua (114), No. 10 Kade Okura of Kalani (140), and No. 10 Caelin Balansag of Roosevelt (119).

And (from the West): No. 1 Pookela DeSantos of Leilehua (172 pounds), No. 1 Erin Hikiji of Mililani (99), and No. 4 Brycen Pagurayan of Kapolei (184).

Four Sibling Combos (We Think) Take Titles

(Note: This section has been updated with more accurate information.)

Families from  Campbell, Mililani, Farrington and Moanalua have multiple divisional winners.

Bedrock did not confirm for sure that they are all siblings, but will find out sooner or later.

The sibling title winners (if they indeed are siblings) are: Mililani’s Atinaeleila Fonoti (170 pounds) and Jacinta Fonoti (186), Campbell’s Kianna Chargualaf (134) and Bethany Chargualaf (157), Farrington’s Teizannaho Paleafei (186) and Timothy Paleafei (287), and Moanalua’s Kiera Nitahara (140) and Karter Nitahara (184).

It turns out that title winners Victoriana Kim (119) and Carson Kim (128) of Mililani are not related.

Also, division champions from Kalani, Kade Okura (140) and Jet Okura (134), are first cousins.

Jacinta Fonoti, a two-time state placer who started the year as the No. 5 girls p4p wrestler before dropping out after a loss, won her finale by fall in 29 seconds against Pearl City’s Ariyana Jaselle Giron.

Campbell’s Anissa Wright, a state runner-up at 145 in 2020 who suffered a loss earlier this year, captured the 140-pound West championship.

Kaui Lee-Tynan of Kapolei is also a West champ at 147 pounds. She went 1-1 against Wright earlier this season and was No. 10 in the p4p rankings at one point.

A Lot Of Falls Sprinkled With Some Super Close Finals

Overall, most of the matches in the two-day East and West championships were won by fall, with a scattering of some by decision. That also held true in the individual finals.

These five finals matches were won by one or two points.

>> Leilehua’s Kanale Coelho made it past Waianae’s Caleb Lauifi in an ultimate tiebreaker, 3-2, at 287 pounds.

>> The aforementioned Balansag was a 13-11 sudden victory winner over Pearl City’s Jeylan Arakawa at 119.

>> Kapolei’s Kinau McBrayer edged Aiea’s Gabriel Grilho 4-3 at 140.

>> Moanalua’s Bravery Gladman tipped Castle’s Patrick McHugh 4-3 at 172.

>> Pearl City’s Jace-Kim Cadiz got the better of Waianae’s Joshua Santiago, 10-8, at 147.

>> Mililani’s Caden Guevara upended Waianae’s Noah Limary 5-3 at 108.

Moanalua Boys And Girls Combine For 15 Individual Championships

Moanalua wound up with eight girls and seven boys division champions

Other schools winning at least four individual titles were: Mililani (seven girls, four boys), Kalani (five boys, one girl), and Campbell (three boys, three girls).

At Least A Handful Of Top OIA Wrestlers Were Not In Action

The following top OIA wrestlers (with projected weight class in parentheses) did not compete Saturday: Moanalua’s Joseph Lathwood (120), Tyger Taam (132) and Rachel Oshita (132), Kalani’s Ramos Suzuki (145) and Waianae’s Leina Balancio-Sadamaru (184).

At Least Seven OIA Wrestlers Are Undefeated

These seven wrestlers are among the known unbeatens in the OIA:

>> Mililani’s Erin Hikiji (99 pounds)
>> Mililani’s Tristan Nitta (104)
>> Moanalua’s Isabelle Asuncion (114)
>> Roosevelt’s Caelin Balansag (119)
>> Kalani’s Kade Okura (140)
>> Leilehua’s Pookela DeSantos (172)
>> Moanalua’s Karter Nitahara (184)

There are probably many more undefeated wrestlers around the state. If any coaches have undefeated wrestlers with at least five wins, alert us at [email protected].

  • Nick, I can confirm that the Kims at Mililani are not related. The rest of the siblings appear to be correct though 👍🏻

    • Thanks!! And I found out that Jet and Kade Okura are first cousins.
