There were no major surprises on Day 1 of the Texaco Wrestling State Championships on Friday at Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Cannon Activities Center in Laie.
Fourteen champions from a year ago who are trying to get a second title all made it through to Saturday’s 11 a.m. semifinals.

In addition, only one top seed did not make it to the semifinals — Kapaa’s Casey Bernabe in Girls 112.
Also, five wrestlers are still going for a third top-6 finish at states to go along with their achievements from 2020 and 2022.
Those five are Asuncion, Eckart, Dikilato, Pagurayan and Lahainaluna’s Naiomi Kulukulualani-Sales.
