It’s not unusual for football players to be among the best shot putters and discus throwers.
And you’ll see that football players many times will be among the best long and triple jumpers.
Interestingly enough, though, during this Hawaii track and field season so far, everyone in the Top 5 statewide in those four events are also football players in the fall.
And those football players are:
>> From Nos. 1 to 5 in the long jump are Punahou’s Christian Kauhane (wide receiver), Moanalua’s Joshua Sanders (defensive end), Konawaena’s Torrance Satta-Ellis (defensive back), Punahou’s Agenhart Ellis (defensive back) and Kahuku’s Leonard Ah You (linebacker).
>> From Nos. 1 to 5 in the triple jump are Kahuku’s Brock Fonoimoana (safety), ‘Iolani’s Asher Matsui (defensive back), Satta-Ellis, Baldwin’s Antone Sanches (JV quarterback) and Ah You.
>> From Nos. 1 to 5 in the shot put are Punahou’s John-Keawe Sagapolutele (quarterback) and Alai Williams (running back), Maui’s Aizek Lakalaka, (two-way lineman), Saint Louis’ Josh Sagapolutele (defensive lineman), and Farrington’s Jacob Maneafaiga (offensive lineman). It’s worth mentioning that Kamehameha’s Pono Meli (offensive lineman) was at No. 5 a week ago.
>> From Nos. 1 to 5 in the discus are John-Keawe Sagapolutele, Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Tobey Lau (running back, linebacker), Kapolei’s Shyson Cachuela (running back), Waianae’s Keoni McLeod (defensive back), and Kahuku’s Stanley Raass (defensive lineman).
An interesting triple jump competition is happening for those Kahuku Red Raiders with Fonoimoana and Ah You at Nos. 1 and 2 right now.
Teammates pushing each other to get better is also happening in the shot put with the Punahou Buff ‘N Blue’s Sagapolutele and Williams at Nos. 1 and 2.
