Saint Louis Boys, Punahou Girls Are Victorious At State Track And Field Championships

They were running like the wind Saturday at War Memorial Stadium on Maui.

More succinctly, runners at the Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field State Championshpis were actually being helped by the wind.

Two individuals — Baldwin’s Joseph Randolph and Hawaii Baptist’s Shane Kawakami-Williams — ran times that — on paper — looked like state meet records. But those winning times (10.63 seconds for Kawakami-Williams in the 100-meter dash and 21.35 by Randolph in the 200) were wind aided and will not go in the record book. So Christian Padron of Damien’s run of 10.63 in 2017 and Andrei Iosivas’ 21.67 in 2018 still stand at the top.

Side note: Iosivas, who went on to star at Princeton in football, was drafted by the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals last month.

One individual state meet record was indeed set — on Friday, the first of the two-day event — and was reported earlier. That was by Le Jardin’s Charli Kennedy, who hit 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump to break the mark set by Natasha Kai in 1999.

Saint Louis and Punahou Take The Team Wins

Team-wise, the Saint Louis boys and Punahou girls captured the titles. For the Buff ‘N Blue, it was the 39th overall championship, fourth in a row and 13th under coach Duncan Macdonald.

For the Crusaders, it was the second state title to go with the one they earned in 2009.

Picking up individual wins for the winning teams were:

>> Saint Louis’ Michael Joshua Price (800 meters)

>> Saint Louis’ Sytyn Lasconia, William Reed, Kanoa Monteilh and Trech Kekahuna (4×100 relay)

>> Punahou’s Nala Stojadinovic (300 hurdles)

>> Punahou’s Dalen Lau, Kylie Moniz, Stojadinovic and Xevani Salanoa (4×400 relay)
