Wednesday’s spring signing day was pretty much the conclusion of the college football recruiting season for the Class of 2021.
Sure, there may be some late commitments, but pretty much the FBS Division I college crop of players from Hawaii is set.
All told, 16 players from the 808 are going the D-I route, including seven to the Power Five conferences.
Also, the breakdown of high schools they’re coming from is interesting as well — eight from private schools in the ILH and eight from public schools.
Eleven of those 16 Hawaii high school recruits announced their commitment before Wednesday. Five waited until Wednesday: Campbell wide receiver Titus Mokiao-Atimalala (UCF), Mililani linebacker Wynden Hoohuli (Nebraska), Kapolei defensive lineman Zhen-Keith Sotelo (Hawaii), Leilehua wide receiver Kalei Akagi (Army) and Punahou defensive back Matagi Thompson (Hawaii).
Mokiao-Atimalala, with 20 offers, was the big prize of the bunch for the Knights.

Hoohuli, who chose Nebraska, was another big signing. He had 13 other D-I FBS offers.

“I call him the silent assassin” Mililani coach Rod York told Omaha.com. “He’s a quiet guy. He talks with his actions, talks with his pads. He’s a great teammate. Heck of a kid to coach. I wish we had more Wyndens. He’s a team guy. That’s probably what makes him more special is he’s humble. He’s an animal on the field, though. He’s pretty intense.”
Cornnation.com wrote this about Hoohuli: “On film, Wynden is an EXPLOSIVE player. He looks like he is shot out of a cannon when chasing QBs and RBs.” That website also calls Hoohuli “the best player in the Aloha State.”
The breakdown by position is: four linebackers, three defensive backs, one defensive lineman, three offensive linemen, three wide receivers, one quarterback and one athlete.
