Sacred Hearts continued its mastery of Interscholastic League of Honolulu sporter air riflery.
The Lancers won the league championship for the third time in four years and also got a second-place individual finish of junior Autumn Garlutzo.
Mid-Pacific senior Mindy Higa became the individual champion, scoring a combined 541-15 in prone, standing and kneeling. Garlutzo finished with 539-19.
The individual portion of the meet was held with schools shooting separately at their own facilities on Saturday. The team title was determined last week.
“Sacred Hearts riflery has been fortunate as it continues to have unbridled support from its administration, especially our athletic department,” coach Carlton Lum said. ” As such, coaches promote technical fundamentals and allow our athletes to challenge themselves. We adhere to a philosophy that through hard work, guidance and growth, girls can accomplish anything. We openly seek their input, allowing all team members to make team decisions so they can strive to accomplish success together.”

“I believe what made this year’s team special was their character,” Lum said. “The entire varsity team was new, having graduated all of last year’s team. Our JV had few returnees, many new members and they performed overwhelmingly above expectations. Character (was also important) because we faced a pandemic which brought never before imagined hardships and uncertainty. Riflery was fortunate to have a complete season, a testament to the league, its member schools, their ADs and coaches all who made it possible. This team persisted, grew, matured and accomplished their goals despite never seen before challenges brought by COVID-19.”
Sacred Hearts’ season average was 1,041.6, about 15 points ahead of the Owls’ 1,026.8. The Lancers finished with wins in all five of the league meets.
Aside from its three league titles in the last four years, Sacred Hearts won state championships in 2017 and 2019 under Lum. No state championship is scheduled for this season (which was postponed from the fall of 2020) due to COVID-19.
