Damien shook off its season-opening loss with a 25-20 victory over Kamehameha II in Interscholastic League of Honolulu varsity football Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
To get the win under first-year coach Anthony Tuitele, the Monarchs (1-1) had to fight back from deficits of 7-0 and 14-13.
In a dominant third quarter, the Monarchs took control on Peyton Dalmacio’s 1-yard TD run and Kahiau Young’s 47-yard interception return for a TD to turn that one-point deficit into a 25-14 lead.
Early in the fourth, Kamehameha II got closer for that 25-20 final when Nazaiah Caravallo found Ty Perkins with a 33-yard touchdown pass.
Young had an incredible defensive night for Damien, with 13 tackles, including one sack and another for loss, and a fumble recovery to go along with his pick-6.
Jayce Jay-Pedro also had a big game defensively for Damien with two sacks and three quarterback hurries.
Perkins finished the night with three touchdown receptions for Kamehameha II.
The Warriors (0-1) play ‘Iolani at 5 p.m. next Friday at Aloha Stadium.
Damien, which lost to ‘Iolani 28-0 one week ago, returns to action next Saturday at 10 a.m. against PAC-5 at the Saint Louis School field.
