Three weeks of football games and three wins for the always-sharp ‘Iolani football team.
The last one was not too easy, though, but the Raiders pulled through for a 35-w0 victory over Kamehameha II in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at Aloha Stadium on Friday night.
At one point, Wendell Look’s squad — ranked No. 7 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 and No. 12 in ScoringLive.com’s power ratings — trailed 14-13.
But ‘Iolani (3-0) pulled it together late in the first half on Kai Preusser’s 67-yard TD reception from Micah Hoomanawanui. Preusser then caught Hoomanawanui’s 2-point conversion pass for a 21-14 lead that stood until early in the fourth quarter.
With 10:52 left in the game, the Raiders took a more comfortable 14-point lead on Hoomanawanui’s 38-yard TD pass to Taniela Taliauli.
Things got a lot tighter, 28-20, when the Warriors’ Ty Perkins hauled in a 58-yard TD pass from Noah Spencer with 7:59 to go.
Later, ‘Iolani running back Brody Bantolina, who rushed for 154 yards and three TDs, put the game pretty much out of Kamehameha II’s reach with a 7-yard TD run.
For Kamehameha II (0-2), Spencer wound up throwing for 202 yards, including 121 yards to Perkins.
‘Iolani’s Stirling Sakashita had a whopping 16 tackles, including a sack and another tackle for loss.
For the Warriors, Waiamau’s Tristan Galindo recorded two sacks among his six tackles. Teammate Carmelo Moses-Fuller had seven tackles.
