Aiea And Nanakuli Make Upward Move To No. 2 In Bedrock Sports’ Power 5s

—–

If voting for the Bedrock Sports Power 5s were a sweepstakes, Aiea and Nanakuli would be the big winners after WEEK 5 of the high school football season.

With only five teams in each division in these weekly rankings, there’s not much breathing room to stay in the top 5 and not much space to move up.

However, Aiea (3-1) — after its 38-14 victory over Woodinville (Washington) in the Pacific Northwest last Thursday — took over the No. 2 spot, rising up from No. 3 in Division I.

Former No. 2 Lahainaluna (3-0) just got past MIL foe Kamehameha-Maui 21-14 and, even though the Lunas won, they fell one spot to No. 3.

That was the only change in D-I.

Things were a bit more volatile in D-II, with Nanakuli’s Golden Eagles (3-1) soaring two spots to No. 2 after downing Kalani 53-20.

Meanwhile, Pearl City (4-1) moved up one place to No. 4 after a 44-0 win over Kalaheo.

PAC-5 (2-0), which hasn’t played since a 41-0 win over Kalaheo on Aug. 13, dropped one slot to No. 3, and Waimea (3-0), despite a 44-0 victory over Kauai, went down a peg to No. 4.

The Wolfpack won’t return to the field until Sept. 16 at Kamehameha II.

One team, Konawaena (3-1), did not crack into the D-I Power 5 despite outscoring BIIF D-I opponents 195-6 in their last three games. If the Wildcats continue to win in convincing fashion, it might not be too long until voters from the media around the state take notice.

In the top-tier Open Division, there was no change. Punahou, which fell 27-20 on a late rally by defending state champion Kahuku’s last Saturday, came close to moving to No. 2 ahead of Mililani, but did not do so.

One undefeated Open Division team, Kapolei at 4-0, got a few votes but not enough to break into the rankings.

Below is a capsule look at Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s Power 5s movement since last week. After that, at the bottom, you can check out the Hawaii high school football WEEK 6 schedule.
