Bedrock Sports Hawaii focused its high school sports coverage on football last fall and wrestling in the winter.
This spring, the focus shifted to judo and track and field.
But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to give some attention to baseball and softball.
Saint Louis alum Caleb Lomavita is shining for the Cal Bears. Read more about Lomavita below.
Garden Isle Umpires Make Sure They Get The Correct Answer
On Thursday, an interesting thing happened during the Kauai vs. Waimea softball game, according to our Kauai correspondent.
With two outs in the seventh (final) inning, Na Menehune were down 6-4 with a runner on first base. The batter took a swing at a one-strike pitch and missed, but she thought it was the third strike and walked back to the dugout.
The Red Raiders, who hadn’t won a game all year, moved from their defensive positions to their dugout as well.
Right as the Waimea baserunners started running for the next base, the Kauai coaches and fans in the stands yelled, “The game is not over.” So, the Red Raiders players scrambled back on the diamond in an effort to stop runs from being scored just before the umpires called timeout to assess the situation.
A check with local arbitrators did not yield a definite answer, so a phone call was put into a state umpire association and that’s how the umpires got their final call:
The batter was out upon entering the dugout after strike two.
It was Kauai’s senior night and the Red Raiders earned their first victory of the season, 6-4.
Kamehameha-Maui’s McKay Pali Hammers Two Home Runs On Opening Day
The following occurred more than a month ago, but it was such a great story that Bedrock Sports couldn’t let it go completely unreported on this website.
One kid from the Valley Isle who made his presence felt at the football state tournament in a big way on Oahu in December, started off the baseball season in amazing fashion, smashing two home runs in the Warriors’ first game.
Pali put video of both of those homers on Twitter, and you can watch them here:

In December, Pali showed his elusiveness as a running back for the Warriors, rushing for 129 yards and a touchdown in a 48-24 victory over Kaiser in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships.
Saint Louis Alum Caleb Lomavita Is Crushing The Ball In College For Cal
Caleb Lomavita, who is a pro prospect, is having a fantastic season as a catcher for Cal.
The former Saint Louis star, now a freshman for the Bears, has six home runs, a triple, seven doubles and 32 RBIS in 37 games.
In addition, he has stolen 12 bases in 13 attempts.
Lomavita was the 2021 Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year and was also one of 12 2021 senior athletes in the state to be inducted into the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor.
From Twitter, here are two of Lomavita’s home runs, one example of him throwing out a base stealer, and another of him stealing a base.
