COVID-19 Is Already Disrupting Hawaii High School Football Season

COVID-19 continues its nastiness.

The virus that at one point seemed like it was under control is rearing its ugly head again in Hawaii.

There has been an uptick in cases and the virus is already affecting this weekend’s long-awaited high school football season openers.

Of the eight scheduled games, two have been canceled and one postponed, OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka told BedrockSportsHawaii.com today. Apparently, COVID-19 is the culprit, according to a report in ScoringLive.com.

Originally scheduled for Friday, the canceled games are Aiea at Leilehua and Campbell at Waipahu.

Leilehua (in green vs. Kahuku in recent years) canceled Friday’s game at home against Aiea, apparently due to COVID-19.

The postponed game — Kamehameha at Mililani — will likely be moved to Sept. 11, but that is not set yet, according to Tanaka.

Another game, Pearl City at Moanalua on Saturday, is in jeopardy. Tanaka will know more about the status of that contest later and BedrockSportsHawaii will update this post when it learns more.

The two canceled games will not be rescheduled because they are not official league games, Tanaka said.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been no official Hawaii high school football played since the November 2019 state championship  tripleheader.
