Videographers Shang Ong and Tiffany Canonigo-Ong of Shang HI Media were there to make a video highlight compilation of Kahuku’s 20-0 victory over Punahou in the Open Division title game of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Nov. 25.
Throughout the season, Shang and Tiffany were at the Kahuku JV games, shooting video for hire on one of the starting offensive lineman. They would stay for the varsity game and, for the first time, got to know what Kahuku football is all about.
Here are some of Shang’s thoughts about shooting the Open championship game.
“It’s so exciting being on the field. There’s a difference than when filming right there because you can feel the energy from the stands, but also from the benches. You could really feel the energy in the place. It was buzzing. We’ve been following the team all season, so it was special to get up close and see how this special Kahuku team really was just that. A team. Hats off to the coaches for creating a culture of putting the team first and not individuals. There were so many individuals that impressed us, easy ones to name: Waika Crawford, Vaaimalae Fonoti, Leonard Ah You, Stanley Raass, Liona Lefau, Kaimana Carvalho, and the list goes on until we’ve named every player. They played as a team and so selflessly, and it was so cool to watch. I will say though, the run where Vaaimalae would just not go down — it wasn’t a long yardage run — but his will to keep his feet moving inspired the video we created. He would not go down, whatever it takes. Some of my favorite clips are not even plays from the game. I love the shot of the O-line coming off the field with the sea of red cheering on the team in the background. The O-line deserves so much credit. I also love the closing shot, and hearing the passion from the crowd. It’s almost like you can pick out every person’s voice from the stands if you listen close enough. So cool, chicken skin. “
