Elyse Umeda-Korth is the new girls basketball coach at Punahou, taking over for Gary Pacarro, who served in the role for the past few years, according to a recent announcement in the school’s online bulletin.
A 2003 Punahou graduate, Umeda-Korth was a standout player for the Buff ‘N Blue who went on to play at Princeton University. She was previously an assistant coach at Punahou and she also served as an assistant at Samford University (Birmingham, Alabama).
As the owner and head trainer at CrossFit 808, Umeda-Korth also brings a strong fitness background to her new coaching job.
“With her extensive background in coaching, commitment to athlete development, and passion for basketball, Umeda-Korth is poised to lead Punahou … through its next chapter,” the bulletin read. “Punahou looks forward to continuing success under her guidance.”
In her senior year of 2003, Umeda-Korth and teammates Rachel Kane, Becky Hogue and Shanna Dacanay were instrumental in bringing the Buff ‘N Blue the state title.
Here is a story from that year’s championship game: Buffs Stall Raiders’ Run.
In 2022-23, the Buff ‘N Blue went 9-9 overall and 5-8 in the ILH.
Pacarro, who graduated from Punahou in 1970, also served as the coach of the varsity boys Division II team.
“Punahou bids aloha and expresses deep gratitude to Gary Pacarro,” the bulletin read. “His dedication and contributions will have a lasting impact on the program.”
