Four Oahu Golfers In Australia To Compete In the Jack Newton International Junior Classic

—–

Four Oahu golfers are among the nearly 400 players in Australia to play in the Jack Newton International Junior Classic on Monday.

All four also play at the high school level in Hawaii. They are Kalani senior Kara Kaneshiro, Kahuku junior Mia Cepeda, Saint Louis junior Tyler Tamayori and Punahou junior Justin Todd. The team captain is Oahu Junior Golf Association president Norman Asao.

The tournament, named after Newton, an Australian golf legend, is at Cypress lakes Golf and Country Club in Hunter Valley.

Newton, who died in April of this year, won 13 tournaments worldwide, including one on the PGA Tour — the Buick-Goodwrench Open in Grand Blanc, Michigan, in 1978. He also had runner-up finishes in the 1975 British Open at Carnoustie and at the 1980 Masters.

In a near-fatal accident in 1983, Newton lost his right arm and right eye when walked into the spinning propellor of an airplane that he was departing, according to Wikipedia. He was given a 50-50 chance to survive, eventually recovered and learned to play golf one-handed by swinging with his left hand in a right-handed stance.
