Football is back, almost.
Hawaii’s schools are back to team conditioning this summer, with the season coming up soon.
According to Hawaii High School Athletic Association football coordinator Wendell Look, who is also an ‘Iolani athletic director, the government has given its approval for the 2021 season to go on as planned.
With that in mind, here are some key dates to remember:
>> July 19: Target date for start of official team practices.
>> July 26: Target date for start of practices with pads.
>> Aug. 6-7: First nonleague games.
Saint Louis’ Koali Nishigaya tried to get more yards in a game against Mililani last season. The 2021 Hawaii high school football season starts with real nonleague games on the weekend of Aug. 6-7.
That last number is a real eye-opener for football hungry Hawaii fans, who have not seen a real game since the state championship tripleheader in November 2019.
There are still things being worked out. For instance, it is not known if fans will be able to attend practices and games, due to COVID-19 health concerns. Other safety procedures for practices and games are also still in the works.
Public schools have not participated in any official interleague sports since March 2020. One league, the private-school Interscholastic League of Honolulu, held a spring season and crowned champions in various sports.
When football returns, competition is expected in the three-team Kauai Interscholastic Federation, the five-team Maui Interscholastic League, and the 10-team Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
