Hawaii’s Chloe Obuhanych Wrestles To Runner-Up Finish At Folkstyle Nationals In Colorado

Hawaii eighth-grader Chloe Obuhanych went to Colorado Springs, Colo., last weekend and returned home with a second-place finish in the USA Wrestling Girls Folkstyle Nationals.

Obuhanych won two matches to make it all the way to the finals of the 14-and-under division 101-pound class, where she lost to Missouri’s Paloma Juarez by fall in 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Obuhanych’s victories came in the quarterfinals against Nebraska’s Kristi Raue (fall, 0:55) and in the semifinals against Colorado’s Bella Arellano-Gandy, 4-2.

At least four other Hawaii girls — including three newly minted state high school champions — competed at the event.

>> Pearl City sophomore Aubrie Molina, the reigning 138-pound state champ, placed third in 16-and-under 138. The girl Molina lost to in the quarterfinals, Missouri’s Amitria McNack, wound up as the division’s runner-up.

>> Kamehameha senior Haley Narahara, who ruled at 122 pounds for her second state championship earlier the month, placed seventh in Junior 122.

>> Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Lainey Eckart, who captured her first state title at 127 pounds, reached the semifinals and earned a sixth-place finish in Junior 127. Her semifinal loss came to eventual division champ Shelby Moore of Washington.

>> Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Kealohilani Grace,  a state runner-up at 168, finished 1-2 in Junior 164.
