Hawaii’s Zayren Terukina Wrestles To Second Place In NCAA Division III Championships

Former Campbell state champion Zayren Terukina wrestled his way to second place today in the NCAA Division III Championships today at 141 pounds in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Terukina, a junior at Wartburg College (Waverly, Iowa) lost a one-point 3-2 title match to Jordan James of the University of Mount Union (Alliance, Ohio).

Previously in the tournament, Terukina defeated Zach Sato of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by 10-1 major decision, Hayden Brown of Johnson and Wales University (Providence, Rhode Island)  8-2, and Brandon Woody of Averett University (Danville, Virginia) by 12-1 major decision in the semifinals.

Terukina (27-2) is a three-time Hawaii state placer, winning the 132-pound state championship in 2017 and the 145-pound title in 2018 and taking third at 126 pounds in 2016.

Kysen Terukina Will Wrestle In NCAA Division I Championships Next Week

Zayren’s brother Kysen Terukina (15-6), a sophomore at Iowa State, will wrestle in the NCAA Division I Championships next weekend in Detroit.

Terukina’s preliminary match at 125 pounds is against Oklahoma State’s Trevor Mastrogiovanni (18-3).

Kysen won four state championships in Hawaii — 132 pounds in 2020, 126 in 2019, 120 in 2018, and 113 in 2017.
