The Iolani boys and girls judo teams won ILH team championships on Friday at the Kekuhaupio Gym at Kamehameha.
Five Raiders also took league individual titles — Tristan Kim (Boys 185), David Yamashiro (Boys 285), Tehya Romero (Girls 98), Maya Rose DeAngelo (Girls 122) and Mie Sataraka (Girls 153) under coach Dan Nishita.
In addition, seven ‘Iolani judoka earned second place individual finishes — Sterling Sakashita (Boys 178), Bronson Morioka (Boys 161), Joshua Frias (Boys 114), Miya Nishikawa (Girls 109), Elle Mizue (Girls 115), Olivia Kim (Girls 139) and Kenzi Griffith (Girls 172).
According to ‘Iolani coach Dan Nishita, this championship is exciting, but states coming up will be a big challenge for his Raiders.
“In the ILH, we have the guys we’re always competing against, but now we’re going against the OIA and outer islands and we know they will be tough. And we haven’t had the ability to see them, especially the outer island teams. States is a different level. Everybody needs to step up. And (OIA champion) Moanalua is definitely the favorite out there on both sides.”
Nishita was super happy for his girls team, which he said hadn’t won a league title in over 15 years.
“It was great to see our girls accomplish that,” he said. “And this boys senior class we’ve been excited about since they were freshmen and even before that, in seventh and eighth grade. But when COVID came, they didn’t have have an opportunity to compete. So for them to get on the mat again and show what they can do is really great.”
Others winning ILH judo championships on Friday were: Punahou’s Tatiana Paragas (Girls 103), Charlotte Campbell (Girls 109), Kelly Ann Ichimura (Girls 115), Kalikomakamae Meyer (Girls 139) and Kekoa Young (Boys 132); Kamehameha’s Aliya Takano (Girls 129), Kaleikoa Mannering (Girls 172), Ayden Coronil (Boys 161) and Kainoa Gonzales (Boys 220); PAC-5’s Kailene Tanji-Seki (Girls 220).
