Kahuku And Lahainaluna Are Top Seeds In Open And D-I State Football

Editor’s note: This post has been edited to reflect the HHSAA’s most recent revision to the state tournament schedule — that all games will be held at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium.

OIA Open Division champion Kahuku — the top-ranked team in the state — is the No. 1 seed for the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships that starts next weekend.

The Red Raiders (8-0) will play No. 5 Campbell (5-3) in the Open semifinals on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 4 p.m. at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium.

Kahuku’s Kealoha Kaio caught a pass during a game against Campbell earlier this year. The two teams meet again in the semifinals of the Open Division state tournament.

In the other semifinal, ILH Open champ Saint Louis (5-3) meets No. 3 Mililani (5-2) at 7 p.m. at the Farrington field.

The Crusaders are the bracket’s second-seeded team and they are also No. 2 in the Bedrock Sports Hawaii Top 10. In addition, Saint Louis is going for its fifth straight state title.

The winners move on to play in the Open state championship game Thursday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. at Farrington. That game will be the nightcap of a doubleheader that also includes the D-I title game.

Lunas Are Top Seed In First Year Back Up To D-I

Lahainaluna (6-0), the MIL D-I champion, takes on a semifinal challenge from BIIF D-I winner Konawaena (6-0) on Friday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. at Farrington.

The Lunas are No. 10 in Bedrock’s Top 10 and the Wildcats are No. 6.

Lahainaluna, won four straight D-II state titles before moving back up to D-I this year, is the bracket’s top seed.

A heavy rush by Aiea helped Na Alii beat Moanalua Saturday to win the OIA D-I championship and advance to states.

In the other semifinal on Friday, second-seeded ‘Iolani (9-0), the ILH D-I winner, goes up against OIA D-I champion Aiea (4-2), the tournament’s third seed, at the Farrington field at 7 p.m.

The Raiders are No. 7 in the Bedrock Top 10.

Na Alii held off Moanalua 17-14 for the OIA D-I title on Saturday night and are returning to the state tournament for the first time since 2009.

The winners advance to the D-I championship game on Thursday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Mililani field.

Division II Brackets Won’t Be Set Until Next Weekend

One more Division II spot has not been won yet. The winner of next Friday’s Radford at Kaiser game will qualify.

The other teams already in that bracket are BIIF D-II champion Hawaii Prep (7-0), MIL D-II representative Kamehameha-Maui (5-2) and KIF champion and Bedrock Sports Hawaii No. 9 Kapaa (6-0).

The D-II state semifinals will be Wednesday, Dec. 22, with the championship game to be played Thursday, Dec. 30.
