Note: The graphic on this post has been changed to reflect Kapaa as the defending overall KIF champion. When it was originally posted, it read that Waimea was beginning defense of its league and D-II state titles. Technically, Waimea is defending its KIF D-II title, but now the graphic provides more clarity and recognizes both schools. Bedrock Sports Hawaii apologizes for any confusion.

Defending Division II KIF and state football champion Waimea will be hosting a mainland team this year in a game that will be televised and broadcast on NFHS.com.
The visiting opponent for the Menehunes is Buckeye Union (Buckeye, Arizona) and the date is Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kauai High also scheduled a mainland opponent — Viewpoint (Calabasas, California) on Aug. 18 at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
Those two contests are among the 22nd known games featuring a team from Hawaii against a team from the mainland in 2023. See the full list of those games farther down.
A big matchup awaits Waimea — at Hanapepe Stadium on Aug. 19 against King Kekaulike. That’s a rematch of the Menehunes’ 45-6 victory over Na Alii in the 2022 D-II state title game.
Kapaa will be defending its overall KIF championship this year. The Warriors made the D-I state tournament and lost in the first round to Waipahu, 49-41, after taking a commanding first-half lead.
One of the Warriors’ nonleague games is against Aiea, a team they played in the early part of the season in 2022 and lost 41-7.
For Buckeye Union, this will be a third trip to Hawaii for a game. The Hawks, who went 7-4 last season, visited Oahu to play Kailua twice in recent years, losing 28-27 in 2017 and 58-6 in 2019.
Viewpoint, meanwhile, went 2-8 in 2022.
The KIF’s league schedule that includes seven nonleague games follows.
