Moanalua And Kapolei Judoka Are Big Winners At OIA Eastern And Western Championships

—–

The high school judo season is getting toward crunch time.

Judoka from Moanalua and Kapolei were the biggest winners at the OIA Eastern and Western Division individual championships last Saturday at the McKinley and Pearl City gyms.

This Saturday, the OIA individual championships are set to be held at the Leilehua gym.

Other big events coming up are the ILH  dual meet championships tonight at the Punahou gym, the ILH individual and team championships on Friday, April 29, at the Kamehameha gym, and the Atlas Insurance/HHSAA Judo State Championships on Saturday, May 7, at the Stan Sheriff Center.

In the OIA Eastern and Western meets, 16 judoka from Moanalua took home titles. Six Kapolei athletes won championships, and there were four from Waipahu, with three each from Roosevelt, Pearl City and Mililani.

One champ, Erin Hikiji of Mililani at 98 pounds, was the only judoka in either the Eastern or Western meets who won a state title the last the time the HHSAA championships were held. She won at 98 pounds in 2019 and will be going for a second state crown in May after COVID-19 wiped out the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
