Moanalua Makes A Statement With Boys And Girls OIA Team Wrestling Championships

Note: In an upcoming post early this week, look for videos of all 28 OIA Wrestling Championships finals and action photos of a handful of finals matches.

Watch out for Moanalua.

Na Menehune wrestled to boys and girls team victories at the OIA Championships on Saturday at Leilehua. And they did it in comfortable fashion.

All told, Moanalua had 16 finalists in the 28 weight classes and wound up with nine winners.

“We’re still the hunters,” Na Menehune boys coach Lucas Misaki said. “We haven’t proven anything at the state level. Every year, we are very confident going into the state tournament, but Kamehameha is still the (two-time reigning boys and girls) champs until proven otherwise.”

Eight of nine Moanalua wrestlers got together for a photo on Saturday after winning OIA individual championships at the Leilehua gym. They are, first row, left to right: Madison Kalamau, Rachel Oshita, Taryn Titcomb and Isabelle Asuncion. Back row: Joshua Estabilio, Blaze Sumiye, Karter Nitahara and Tyger Taam. Missing from photo: Joseph Lathwood. (Image credit: Lucas Misaki).

At least four of Moanalua’s individual champions on Saturday were mighty impressive in the final — Isabelle Asuncion, Rachel Oshita, Blaze Sumiye and Karter Nitahara. All four are in Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Asuncion (12-0, No. 9 p4p) got past a tough customer in the 119 final, 7-0 over Victoriana Kim of Mililani. It was a battle of placers at the 2020 states, where Asuncion took third at 102 and Kim earned fourth at 107, and both were coming off OIA divisional titles one week ago.

In addition, Asuncion moved up one weight class from 114 right before that East Division tournament.

“She’s only a junior,” said Misaki, who sees bigger things ahead for Asuncion.

Oshita (12-0, No. 7 p4p) scored a 10-2 major decision over Pearl City’s Jacey Chung in the 129 final.

Sumiye (No. 4 p4p) and Nitahara (12-0, No. 7 p4p) got things done in quick-strike, aggressive fashion.

Sumiye overwhelmed previously undefeated Darren Cababag-Silva of Mililani by major decision, 17-5 in the 162 final.

Nitahara perhaps sealed an upcoming state top seed, defeating Aiea’s Raphael Dela Cruz by fall in 1:45 at 184 pounds.

“Karter and Blaze love to wrestle,” Misaki said. “Any time they can go to a wrestling practice, they’re there and getting better at their craft.”

Misaki had this to say about his boys team and Moanalua’s girls team coached by Sean Sakaida:

“This is probably the easiest team to coach since I’ve been at Moanalua. The chemistry, the way they cheer for each other, it’s nothing like we’ve ever had in this program. It is special. They cheered loud for every single one of our finalists as they were stepping on the mat.”

Two more Moanalua wrestlers grabbed championships and remained undefeated (with at least five wins) — Joseph Lathwood (15-0 at 122 pounds) and Tyger Taam (13-0, 134).

Other Na Mehehune who wrestled to OIA titles on Saturday were Madison Kalamau (109), Taryn Titcomb (157), and Joshua Estabilio (108).

“Taryn found the love of the sport again,” Misaki said. “For a while, she wasn’t sure she was going to wrestle until her teammates got her to come out.

Matchup Of The Day

Clearly, the most intriguing matchup of the day came at 172 pounds, where Leilehua’s Pookela DeSantos (No. 1 p4p) and Kapolei’s Bryce Pagurayan (No. 4 p4p) met in the final.

DeSantos, now 16-0, didn’t allow Pagurayan to put any tarnish into that No. 1 ranking, winning by fall in 2:15.

Making Names For Themselves And Staying Undefeated

The following OIA champions from Saturday continue to make a name for themselves by remaining undefeated:

>> Leilehua’s Kanale Coelho
>> Pearl City’s Aubrie Molina
>> Campbell’s Holden Soares
>> Pearl City’s Jace Kim-Cadiz
>> Waianae’s Vanderlei Yong

Stubborn like his team nickname “Mules,” Coelho defeated Waipahu’s Caleb Lauifi in a sudden victory overtime period, getting a takedown for the 5-3 final in the 287 title match.

Things looked a lot like they would go in favor of Lauifi, who took a 3-1 lead early.

But Coelho (12-0), who wears his effort on his sleeve and on his face, found a way.

“I was losing at first,” Coelho said. “I thought I was going to lose, actually. But he kept stalling and I kept applying the pressure and coach told me what to do. I applied what he said. That’s what I always do, I listen to the coach. The crowd got me going. I heard everybody screaming and yelling, so I was like ‘Ok, I know what I have to do to win.’ I knew I needed a point. When I won, it was like a blur. I was so excited because I didn’t think I was going to win at all. I was tired. We were both tired. It was a dogfight.

Coelho, who is a Leilehua offensive lineman in football and who is wrestling to stay in shape, is looking forward to states.

“Everybody keeps telling me ‘Keep on the path you’re on,’ ” he said. “Wrestling is a secondary sport for me, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to make sure I’m good at it.”

When told that Bedrock Sports interviewed his heavyweight OIA champ, Mules coach Kevin Corbett said boldly and without hesitation, “I love that kid.”

A week earlier in the OIA West championships, Coelho beat Lauifi in the final, 3-2 in an ultimate tiebreaker.

Molina improved to 10-0, but faced her toughest match to date — against Campbell’s Anissa Wright — to capture the girls 140-pound division with a 5-4 victory.

Wright has a state pedigree, having placed second at the Blaisdell at 145 pounds two years ago.

“It was a tough match,” Molina said. “In the beginning, I was just trying to feel out what she could do and stuff and then I would work on things  This week I’m going to be training a lot harder. If I do end up meeting her, or anyone, in states, I will wrestle better.”

Kim-Cadiz (18-0), who has been on a mission to make his mark all year, edged Moanalua’s Joshua Lewandowski 5-2 for the 147-pound title.

Yong (12-0) had his hands full with Moanalua’s Christian Paleafei, but finally got the 222-pound championship by fall in 5:14.

In the 154-pound final, Soares (18-0) put on the attack early and often in dropping Moanalua’s Christian Jacob by major decision, 17-2.

“Two years ago as a sophomore, I didn’t place at all at states and placed eighth in the OIAs,” Soares said. “I worked with my coach and two years later this is where I am. Just gotta work toward states and try for first. Gotta stay humble. Everyone’s a champion. It’s either you lose or you win. It’s 50-50 every time.”

Many Other Highlights On Saturday

Here are some of the other noteworthy happenings from Saturday at the Leilehua gym:

>> Kalani’s Evelyn Suzuki fell behind but came back to edge Waipahu’s Kaytie Conselva for the 114-pound crown..

>> Campbell’s Kianna Chargualaf, who suffered an early season defeat, is primed to make a statement at states. Chargualaf, who placed third at the big show in 2020 at 138 pounds, took the OIA 134-pound title by topping Kahuku’s Lily Polvado by fall in 1:44.

>> Kalani’s Sarah Balbarino upset top-seeded Atinaeleila Fonoti of Mililani by fall in 3:36 to earn the 170-pound championship.

>> Kahuku’s Maia Esera had the fastest pin among the 28 finals — in 32 seconds over Radford’s Isabella Martinez.

>> Kalani’s Kade Okura (No. 10 p4p) fended off a major challenge from Kapolei’s Kinau McBrayer in the 140 semifinals, winning 5-4.

In the final, Okura met a hard-charging Keegan Goeas of Castle and scored an 8-0 major decision victory.

Goeas came into the match having beaten No. 2 seed Kai Simmons of Moanalua 4-2 and No. 3 seed Gabriel Grilho of Aiea 8-5.

>> Previously undefeated Caelin Balansag (No. 10 p4p) of Roosevelt lost her first match of the season to Mililani’s Victoriana Kim in the 119 semifinals, by fall in 4:00.

>> The most controversial match of the tournament, by far, was the 186-pound final, where Waianae’s Leina Balancio-Sadamaru beat two-time state placer Jacinta Fonoti of Mililani by injury default at 3:50.

Trying to keep strictly to facts learned from talking to some OIA tournament officials, the Mililani coaches felt that Balancio-Sadamaru used an illegal and unsafe hold and lodged a protest.

Before the match was over, with Fonoti screaming in pain and no call of an illegal or unsafe hold by the match officials, the Mililani coaches went on to the mat to alert the referees that they felt that Fonoti was in danger. Later on, there was some talk that a Trojans coach physically contacted a referee with his hand, but Bedrock Sports heard one version in which the gesture was meant to get the referee’s attention this his wrestler was in danger. In another version, the coach never touched the referee.

The protest did not succeed and Balancio-Sadamaru is the 186 champ. It is not known if there will be any kind of penalty incurred by the Mililani coach who went on to the mat.

According to Mililani assistant Tyler Diamond, this particular safety issue will be brought up at the next OIA wrestling coaches meeting.
