Hawaii’s Tristan Nitta keeps on winning.
After going undefeated with all wins by fall in the 2022-23 season to take the 102-pound state high school title, Nitta followed up with a victory at the USA Wrestling Northwest Regionals on Saturday in Centralia, Washington,
Nitta, a Mililani senior, won the 100-pound Junior Girls Freestyle division with four round-robin wins — three by technical fall and one by fall.
One other Hawaii wrestler captured a championship at the event — Kapolei freshman Eloise Woolsey in the 16-U Girls 132 Freestyle. Woolsey recently won the 132 state high school championship for Kapolei.
At least 13 other Hawaii wrestlers competed in the event, including many taking part in both freestyle and Greco-Roman brackets. Of note:
>> Mayhem Woolsey, a Kapolei High wrestler and the older brother of Eloise, placed second in Junior Boys 138 Freestyle and sixth in Greco-Roman.
>> Analu Woode placed third in 16-U Boys 100 Freestyle.
>> Yuki Uchishiba placed fifth in Junior Boys 120 Greco-Roman.
>> Hunter Berger, who won the 106 state high school title last month for Saint Louis, made it to the quarterfinals in 16-U 113 Freestyle.
>> Joseph Lathwood, formerly a Moanalua wrestler, made it to the quarterfinals in Junior Boys 138 Freestyle.
Tyger Taam Gives It A Go At High School Nationals
Elsewhere, Moanalua’s Tyger Taam went 4-2 at the National High School Coaches Association nationals in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Saturday.
The event bills itself as the premier (high school) wrestling tournament in the country. The top 8 finishers in each weight class are given All-American status
Taam, who won the 138-pound state championship last month, made it as far as the sophomore quarterfinals at 132 pounds.
After four straight wins, Taam took slim leads in his final two matches, but wound up losing both by fall.
