RECRUITING: Maryland Offer In Hand, Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa Steps In For The Injured Tama Amisone as Kapolei Starting QB

—–

Via Kapolei to the Maryland Terrapins by a Tagovailoa.

Been done. Could happen again.

Yes, the Tagovailoa NFL/college/high school football wheel keeps on spinning.

Taulia Tagovailoa is the one who made that Kapolei to Maryland trek and is now a junior quarterback for the Terrapins, who are off to a 4-2 start this fall.

It’s possible that his cousin, Tuli Tagovailoa-Amosa, a junior quarterback for the Kapolei Hurricanes, could take the same path.

Three years ago while in the eighth grade in Alabaster, Ala., Tuli got his own college offer from Maryland. He then played his freshman year at Thompson High, the same school Taulia went to when older brother Tua, now with the Miami Dolphins, was making a name for himself with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

As a sophomore, Tuli moved back to Hawaii and was Kapolei’s starter in the shortened 2021 season.

Tuli Will Take The Staring Job With Teammate Liatama Amisone Out For The Season

But this year, Tuli — whose brother, Kapolei and Notre Dame star Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, is now a defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders — took on more of a secondary role in the quarterback situation for the Hurricanes, with sophomore Liatama Amisone taking the bulk of the snaps.

However, that scenario has changed because, unfortunately for Kapolei, Amisone will miss the rest of the season with a collarbone injury suffered in the first half of Saturday’s 42-21 loss to Mililani.

With Tagovailoa-Amosa leading the offense, the Hurricanes (5-3, 2-3 OIA Open) finish their regular season at home against Leilehua (0-6-1, 0-5) on Friday. After that, it’s the first round of the playoffs the following week against the winner of this Saturday’s Mililani (5-0, 6-2) at Kahuku (5-0, 7-2) game that will determine the league regular season title.

A state tournament berth is also a possibility for Kapolei, but it won’t be an easy path.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity,” Tuli told Bedrock Sports Hawaii on a Monday evening phone call. “I’ve learned from Tama and have been taking notes. The first thing that pops into my mind when I think of him is ‘baller.’ I’m going to keep on working and really listen to the coaches and keep moving forward. Coach Bobby (offensive coordinator George) and (head) coach (Darren) Hernandez have been great, and Tama pushes me every day. We want to end the season strong.”

In the loss to Mililani, Tagovailoa-Amosa threw for 172 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

In five games as a starter a year ago, he threw for 478 yards in five games, and has added 356 yards passing and 177 yards rushing to his career totals in parts of eight games this fall.

Amisone Also Gets An Offer (And Other Recruiting News)

Three weeks ago, Amisone also got a college offer — from coach Timmy Chang at the University of Hawaii.

There hasn’t been a ton of recruiting news lately, with the Hawaii high school season heading to the hone stretch.

Expect some big announcements to be forthcoming when the season ends or, perhaps, even before that.

Among the still undecided are: former Kamehameha linebacker Tausili Akana of Skyridge in Utah, Kapaa linebacker Solomone Malafu, Kahuku linebacker Leonard Ah You, and Farrington offensive lineman Iapani Laloulu.

In other recent recruiting news, Bedrock Sports Hawaii learned that:

>> Saint Louis linebacker Anelu Lafaele received offers from Cal and UNLV

>> Punahou defensive lineman Kekei Burnett received an offer from Fresno State

>> Kahuku linebacker Leonard Ah You received an offer from Fresno State

Below are Hawaii’s known 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 college recruiting offers.
