Reggie Torres Hired By Kamehameha As An Athletic Director

Reggie Torres golfed the last two days and enjoyed the relaxation.

Good timing because, with the fall sports season approaching, his weekends will likely get booked up elsewhere.

Torres, the former Kahuku football and wrestling head coach, is now one of two athletic directors at Kamehameha.

The other Kamehameha AD is Ed Paola, who has been promoted from his post as associate athletic director, where he had been since 2015.

The plan at Kamehameha is to have a third athletic director come aboard in the near future, and all of them will be under Rob Hesia, the Director of Campus Athletics and Human Performance.

Glennie Adams, who was the school’s athletic director since 2011, retired recently.

“When Glennie retired, I shot my name in,” the 56-year-old Torres said. “This is a great opportunity. I had applied to some other schools previously. I applied at Waialua, when Darnell (Arceneaux) got the job.”

Torres, who most recently in the sports world was an assistant football coach under Kale Ane at Punahou, will have a full list of Warriors sports to oversee — cheerleading, football, judo, paddling, kayaking, sailing, softball soccer, swimming and diving, surfing, and water polo.

That list is likely to get smaller once the third AD is hired.

“Got a lot of sports, and with soccer there’s 11 teams at various levels playing the sport at Kamehameha,” said Torres, who is part Native Hawaiian.

Torres is thrilled to be back in sports full-time. He’s been doing security at Kahuku and Kualoa Ranch and also has been running a summer fun program.

“It will be nice to have just one job,” he added.

Torres’ son Reggie Boy was part of the 2005 Kamehameha football championship team coached by Kanani Souza, and his eldeat granddaughter will be a freshman at the school this fall.

Torres spent 36 years coaching in the Kahuku wrestling program as either a head or an assistant. For Red Raiders football, it was 29 years as a head or an assistant — with four more as an assistant at Punahou.

Torres coached Kahuku to state titles in football (2006, 2011, 2012), boys wrestling (2004 and 2006), and girls wrestling (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008).
