Roonui Satta-Ellis’ 32-Yard Field Goal In Overtime Pushes Konawaena Past BIIF Defending Champion Hilo, 24-21

Roonui Satta-Ellis kicked a 32-yard field goal in overtime to lead the Konaweana Wildcats to a 24-21 overtime upset victory over defending Division I Big Island Interscholastic Federation and state champion Hilo in the season opener for both teams Friday

It was a huge accomplishment for the host Wildcats, who were once a D-II league and state powerhouse before moving up to Division I several years ago.

The Vikings — ranked No. 10 in the BedrockSportsHawaii.com Top 10 — have been the undisputed kings of BIIF football for more than a decade. And they have also recently flexed their muscles in state circles, too, winning the D-I state title in 2017 and 2019 and finishing as runners-up in 2018.

“It was a typical game after a long layoff,” Wildcats coach Brad Uemoto told Bedrock Sports Hawaii via text after the win. “Sloppy, but fun to be out there. So proud of my players for persevering and grinding out a win.”

Roonui Satta-Ellis kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal in overtime to beat Hilo on Friday night.

The Wildcats (1-0) play at home again next Saturday (Oct. 30) against Keaau. Those Cougars begin their regular season this Saturday (Oct. 23) at Waiakea.

Hilo will try to get back on the winning track on Nov. 6 at Wong Stadium against Waiakea.
