So far, Saint Louis is keeping the athletic director position in house.
Glenn Medeiros told Bedrock Sports Hawaii on Tuesday that former Saint Louis and University of Hawaii football star receiver Gerald Welch is the school’s interim athletic director.
The position opened late last month, when Chad Konishi left as AD to become Chaminade’s baseball coach.
Konishi was in the Crusaders’ post for a little more than three years after taking over Ryan Blangiardi in August 2019.
The interim position is a step up for Welch, who was an associate athletic director for four years.
“I have learned a lot in the last four years and will always have our student-athletes’ best interest in mind when making any type of decision,” Welch said.
Medeiros said a search will be made for a full-time athletic director and that Welch is one of the candidates.
Welch competed in football, wrestling and baseball for the Crusaders in the 1990s.
From 1997 through 1999 for the Crusaders, Welch caught 190 passes — mostly from current University of Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang — for 3,490 yards and a still-standing state-record of 46 touchdowns. The yardage total is second in the state record books to the 3,510 Punahou’s Kanawai Noa compiled from 2012 to 2014.
From 2000 through 2004 for the Rainbow Warriors, when Chang was also on the team, Welch caught 101 passes for 1,091 yards and nine TDs.
