SATURDAY SCOREBOARD: Kapaa Sews Up KIF Championship, State Berth

Author’s note: This story was updated after Bedrock Sports Hawaii learned from the Maui News that No. 8 Lahainaluna earned the MIL D-I title and locked up a D-I state berth by beating Maui High on Saturday.

No. 9 Kapaa clinched the KIF championship with a 20-6 victory over Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium on Saturday.

The victory also sewed up a state Division II berth for the Warriors (5-0).

In addition, No. 8 Lahainaluna (5-0), by virtue of its 26-9 victory over Maui High (3-2) on Saturday, locked up the MIL Division I championship and a state D-I berth. This early clinching was a result of a recent switch in schedule by the MIL when it found out that the HHSAA planned to hold state tournament games on Dec. 17, the same day as a possible league D-I title game. An emergency decision was made to scrap the two-round system the league has used for many years and base the title on overall records.

Elsewhere, No. 1 Kahuku dropped No. 5 Campbell 49-23 in Ewa Beach to clinch the OIA Open Division regular-season crown and the top seed in the league’s semifinals.

Moanalua (4-1), which defeated Roosevelt 27-21 on Friday, locked up the OIA D-I regular-season title and a spot in the division’s Dec. 11 title game when Aiea tripped 38-7 on Saturday. The winning Na Alii (3-1) also clinched a spot in that Dec. 11 division title game that will be a rematch of their 28-25 loss to Na Menehune earlier this season.

On the Big Isle, Hawaii Prep edged Kamehameha-Hawaii 14-10 to grab the BIIF regular-season D-II title. Both of those teams will play in the league semifinals next week.

All of Friday’s and Saturday’s scores, next week’s schedule, and updated league standings follow.
