Waipahu And Waimea Earn Their Second Football State Titles

For Waimea, it was a repeat. For Waipahu, it was a return to the top for the first time since 2018.

The Menehunes from the Garden Isle topped Kamehameha-Maui 31-28 on Saturday night for their second straight state Division II football title.

That game was the opener of a doubleheader at the Mililani High field. In the nightcap, Waipahu rallied in the second half to secure a 53-28 victory over defending champion Konawaena for the state D-I championship. It was a rematch of last year’s final, which was won by the Wildcats from the Big Isle. It was also the Marauders’ second D-I title and first since 2018.

In the first game, Shayden Ranis-Alameda Dela Cruz kicked a 40-yard field goal for a 31-21 Waimea lead early in the fourth quarter and that 10-point cushion was enough in the end. The Warriors got within three with 2:52 left on Joshua Kerr’s 20-yard fumble recovery TD return.

In the second game, Waipahu led in the early going, but trailed 21-18 in the third quarter before outscoring Konawaena 35-7 the rest of the way.

Final team records for every Hawaii team follows.
