Waipahu’s Preston Taumua, the most highly recruited Hawaii high school football player in the Class of 2024, chose Nebraska on Sunday as his college football destination.

Taumua, the 6-foot-4, 315-pound offensive lineman and four-star recruit, picked the Cornhuskers over 21 other Division I FBS schools that offered him. He made the announcement at around 8 p.m. (1 a.m. Monday in Nebraska) via a video on the 247sports.com YouTube channel. Taumua was also scheduled to host an announcement party at the Republik at that time.

“I was looking for a support system and how I got along with everybody,” Taumua said about how he picked a school. He also said on the video that he had recently further broke down his top schools to Nebraska Arizona and Oregon.

When the time came on the video, Taumua said, “For the next three or four years, I am committing to Nebraska.”

That was perhaps a hint that he may, if he continues to improve, try to get to the NFL early (after three years).

Taumua was the 11th rated interior lineman in the nation.

A year ago, Taumua helped Aiea to the OIA Division I (middle tier) championship game (a 38-30 loss to Waipahu) and all the way into the state D-I semifinals (a 27-24 loss to eventual champion Konawana). In the offseason, he tranferred from Na Alii to Waipahu.

Taumua’s other offers were from Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, BYU, California, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, UNLV, Utah, Washington, and Washington State.

Before whittling his choices to three, Taumua had Alabama and Auburn in his Top 5.
