WEEK 5 of the Hawaii high school football season started Thursday with two games and continued Friday with 10 more.
On Saturday night, nine games will be held, involving six teams ranked in the ScoringLive.com’s top 10.
The season is really starting to heat up.
The biggie tonight is on the North Shore, with No. 5 Punahou (3-0) locking horns with No. 1 Kahuku (3-0). The question on many people’s minds is can the Buff ‘N Blue hang with the Red Raiders, who have won 13 in a row including the state Open title a year ago and are showing no signs of slowing down?
On Friday, two teams in the top 10 played. No. 7 Kapolei (4-0) had its hands full and finally shook off rival Waianae 35-21 on the Seariders’ home field to remain unbeaten.
And over at the Mililani High field, visiting Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas (No. 8 nationally by MaxPreps.com) topped No. 4 Saint Louis 56-14.
In an exiting game in the Pacific Northwest, Farrington — with the whole No. 9 Aiea football team in the stands — rallied back to beat McMinnville (Oregon) 21-18 on Chansen Smith’s 9-yard TD run with 1:06 left (stats are from ScoringLive.com).
Against mainland teams this weekend, Hawaii went 3-1, with the Crusaders as the only losing squad. Those ninth-ranked Aiea Na Alii started things off against the continental teams, beating Woodinville, Washington, (less than 200 miles from McMinnville), 38-14 on Thursday night.
Radford also got a win Friday, rolling past host Magnolia of Anaheim, California, 42-6.
So far this season, Hawaii is 3-5 against mainland teams with a bunch more of those games coming up.
