There are at least three Hawaii high school football teams looking for a new coach to lead them in the 2023 season and beyond.
Bedrock Sports Hawaii reported previously on the in-flux coaching situations at Moanalua and Kamehameha.
There’s going to be a switch at Keaau, too. Ian Van Cleave, a former Cougars’ player who was the co-head coach for the 2019 season with Leo Abellera and the sole head coach for 2021 and 2022, has stepped down.
“I’ve been part of this program for a long time,” Van Cleave told Bedrock Sports Hawaii on Friday. “In 2002, I was a freshman. In 2010, I started coaching. It’s a tough decision. I’m still a teacher here, so I’d like to continue to help the program, but my family is growing and this program deserves and needs someone who can devote all the time, energy and focus.”
This season, Keaau finished 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the BIIF. In the Cougars’ only nonleague game, they beat Kalani of the OIA, 36-21.
In his three seasons at the helm, Van Cleave went 10-14.
