Four years ago, Tatum Moku was a Damien eighth grader who was invited to participate against varsity competition in the Cal Track/Ruby Tuesday Track and Field Invitational.
Moku won the pole vault that day against freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, clearing the bar at 11 feet.
Despite an eventual missed coronavirus year, Moku has continuously improved and also transferred to Kamehameha. Last Saturday, she cleared 13-2, which is two inches better than her previous best of 13-0 this season and one inch better than the 13-1 state meet record she set last year. Moku’s accomplishment Saturday is believed to be the the best pole vault performance ever by a Hawaii-raised female athlete. The University of Hawaii’s Tiziani Ruiz Dominguez, who is from Mexico, cleared 13-6.25 in 2016.
