FOCUS ON FOOTBALL: Three Squads Already Locked Into 16-Team Hawaii Football State Championships

—–

Three are in. Thirteen more to go.

As the weeks go by, more teams will get into November’s First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Football State Championships.

Two teams automatically qualified due to a new rule passed by the Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association and the HHSAA in the summer.

That rule states that a league no longer needs to have more than one competitor in a division to send a team to states. In the past, if a league only had one team in a specific division, that team was ineligible.

Thanks to that decision and Kapaa’s choice to classify as Division I instead of D-II put the Warriors into the states, up a classification from last year, when they became the D-II state champs. The KIF’s two other teams in the three-team league are both classified in D-II.

PAC-5, which for the last few seasons has been the only D-II team in the ILH, has also clinched a state berth. This year, there are three other schools from the ILH playing a Division II schedule aside from the Wolfpack, but those teams (Saint Louis II, Punahou II and Kamehameha II) are already not eligible for states because they are, in fact, those schools’ second varsity team. It makes sense that only one varsity team per school should be able to qualify for the big show.

The latest team to secure a spot at states? Waimea from the KIF. After Kapaa’s decision to move up, it left the Garden Isle league’s D-II berth to be decided by whoever finishes higher in the standings between the Menehunes and Kauai High. Waimea’s 6-0 win over the Red Raiders on Saturday, its second victory of the season in the rivalry, clinched it.

Football State Championships Dates Set, Site To Be Determined

The state tournament (subject to change) will be held on the following dates. A site has not been determined, but according to a source close to the situation, it’s likely Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium will be the place.
