WEEK 3 of the Hawaii high school football season started Thursday with two games — convincing wins by Punahou and Honokaa.
On Friday, the weekend kicked into high gear with six games, and the full slate will finish up Saturday with nine more games.
By far the closest game Friday was Kapolei’s 27-24 win over Aiea. Na Alii of OIA D-I were trying for the upset of the Hurricanes after falling behind by 17 points.
Two late TDs and an onside kick recovery put a scare into Kapolei, but eventually the Hurricanes survived.
You can read that game story at ESPNHonolulu.com: Hurricanes Remain Unbeaten After Win Against Aiea, 27-24. And be sure to check back to Bedrock Sports Hawaii this afternoon for a follow-up story on what was an amazing comeback bid.
Elsewhere on Friday, it looks like Baldwin is really struggling, losing its second straight game in the MIL opener, 27-6 at King Kekaulike.
And, the fortunes of two BIIF teams have really changed this season. Kamehameha-Hawaii, the No. 1 team in the Bedrock D-II Power 5s, rocked visiting Hawaii Prep 45-0. One year ago, it was Ka Makani who got past the Warriors for the league’s D-II title and a spot in the state tournament.
Hawaii teams fell to 0-4 in games against mainland squads this season after Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, California) topped Farrington 26-7 at the Govs’ Skippa Diaz Stadium.
There are seven more games pitting Hawaii teams against mainland foes and you can find that schedule at Bedrock’s Hawaii High School Football Command Center. You’ll find a lot of data there on the 2022 season, so when you get to it, scroll toward the bottom or search for “mainland.”
