Two Kapolei Inline Hockey Arenas youth players — Royal Kekuewa and Kainalu Cox — were part of the Class of 2023’s graduating class at Kamehameha this spring.
Both are headed to college to pursue a degree and other interests.
Kekuewa, who moved up to play in the KIHA men’s Division I this summer, will attend Hawaii Pacific University, where he will play soccer for the Sharks’ NCAA Division II team. During the winter, he finished up his career as a center midfielder for the Kamehameha soccer team, earning ILH first-team All-Star honors and Scoring Live second-team All-State status.
Cox will be headed to San Diego State University, where he plans to study computer engineering. He hopes to play snare in the Aztecs drumline. In addition, he wants to find a rink in the area to continue playing inline hockey.
Both Kekuewa and Cox have some great memories playing at KIHA.
“Hanging out with the boys, especially during tournaments,” Cox said.
Kekuewa remembers scoring the winning goal in the championship game at a tournament in Corona, California.
“We won (both) AAU International and Club Gold,” he said. “It was a big accomplishment because everyone doubted us and we proved everyone wrong. Also celebrating with all the boys after is something I’ll never forget.”
