Nanakuli Zooms To No. 1 Ranking In Bedrock’s Division II Power 5; Kaiser Jumps Into Rankings

—–

For a team that’s all about power — as in running game and overall hard-nosed defense — it seems to suit Nanakuli pretty well that they are the No. 1 team this week in Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s Division II ”POWER” 5.

The voting was close, however, with the Golden Hawks (5-1, 5-0 OIA D-II) just edging out last week’s No. 1 — KIF front-runner Waimea (5-0, 3-0).

Voters from around the state obviously looked at Nanakuli’s impressive 21-3 victory over Pearl City on Friday as the impetus to put the Golden Hawks on top. Those Chargers were No. 3 going into that game and remain there after the loss that came without starting quarterback Trey Dacoscos.

The Menehunes, who were No. 1 last week, barely squeaked by Kauai High, 6-0, on Saturday.

In D-I, the ‘Iolani Raiders (6-0, 1-0 ILH) have been No. 1 all season, but the margin gets thinner every week. No. 2 Waipahu (5-1, 4-0 OIA) is getting mighty close.

An interesting Bedrock Power 5 Open Division battle has been brewing for the last month, too. At the No. 2 spot, Mililani remains in place, just ahead of Punahou, but the voting has been razor close.

It was a week of little movement in the three divisions.

Kaiser (3-3, 3-2 OIA) had been knocking on the door all season and finally moved into the No. 5 spot in D-II. King Kekaulike, a resurgent team this season on Maui, just missed making the Power 5 this week after being at No. 5 for two straight weeks.

In rankings by other media outlets (KHON’s Cover 2, Hawaii Prep World, and Scoring Live), Punahou holds the lead at No. 2 over Mililani.

For the first time this season, Bedrock has the Power 5s point totals based on a the voting system in place. See below.
