Separate From The ILH, OIA Releases 2022 Football Schedule; Kamehameha At Kahuku Is Marquee First-Week Game

—–

The regular-season football alliance between the OIA and ILH is over. It lasted three seasons — 2018, 2019, 2021.

This year, for the first time since 2019, the leagues will have two separate regular-season schedules.

The now-defunct agreement came to an end a few months ago when the ILH voted to schedule regular-season games within its own league, Saint Louis coach Ron Lee told Bedrock Sports Hawaii on Saturday.

According to Lee, Saint Louis, Kamehameha and Punahou will all field two varsity teams. In the Open Division, the big three will all play each other three times.

Although Bedrock Sports is waiting on final confirmation, it is believed that in Division I, ‘Iolani and Damien will play against each other twice and against Saint Louis II, Kamehameha II, Punahou II and PAC-5 once. The Wolfpack will be the only ILH team eligible for the D-II state tourney, and a new rule passed by the HHSAA executive board Thursday will place them automatically into the tournament as the ILH’s only eligible D-II representative.

The OIA-ILH football alliance, according to those in the know, was a success. It helped the ILH, with only six total teams in three competitive divisions, to schedule a lot more regular-season games. It also created exciting interleague games against schools close in ability and it put money in the OIA’s coffers, since that league hosted the bulk of those games.

Now that the ILH has nine varsity football teams, it is in much better shape competition-wise than it was in 2018.

OIA’s Full Schedule Is Out, Including Nonleague Games

The OIA football schedule released Saturday features Kamehameha at Kahuku on Aug. 6 as the marquee game of the season’s first week. For the Red Raiders, it will mark the long-awaited grand-opening of their brand-new artificial turf field.

Kahuku didn’t schedule its nonleague games lightly. The Red Raiders also host Punahou on Sept. 3.

As previously reported, the Red Raiders visit national power St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California, on Sept. 17 and then host St. Frances Academy of Baltimore on Sept. 30.

As of June 11, all known football games involving Hawaii teams follow, including eight known games against mainland teams.

One Hawaii vs. mainland game not previously reported: Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, Calif.) at Farrington on Aug. 19.

IN FUTURE POSTS, Bedrock Sports will update readers often when the master schedule changes, especially when the ILH, KIF, BIIF and MIL schedules are released.
