Starting QB Chevan Cordeiro Is Joined By Fellow UH Transfer Kyler Halvrosen At San Jose State

Chevan Cordeiro is the No. 1 ranked quarterback in the Mountain West, according to HeroSports.com.

CollegeFootballNetwork.com, however, ranks Cordeiro fifth in the 12-team conference.

But rankings are just one thing. Experience is another. Cordeiro, who followed Tua Tagovailoa at the position at Saint Louis School and played four seasons at the University of Hawaii, will be playing a sixth college football season and second at San Jose State this fall.

And if things go well in 2023, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound Cordeiro could jump into the Top 30 of all-time college football passers. After passing for 3,251 yards last season, Cordeiro’s career total is 9,418.

Another 3,000-plus-yard season could put him among the Top 30. Right now, North Texas’ Mason Fine (2016 to 2019) stands at No. 30 with 12,505 yards.

Cordeiro, by the way, is already at No. 192 on the list, one spot below former Stanford (and Indianapolis Colts) QB Andrew Luck.

In its QB rankings, HeroSports.com says this about Cordeiro: “(He) has a good shot to become the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in 2023.”

As Hawaii fans already know, he’s fleet of foot, as evidenced by his nine rushing touchdowns last year during the Spartans’ 7-5 season.

Here’s an assessment of Cordeiro’s 2022 campaign by CollegeFootballNetwork.com: “Cordeiro was accurate with the football and certainly was a fan of testing the waters downfield. He may have had a little bit of help with some luck on the back end, but Cordeiro made a name for himself with accurate passes all over the field. He picks and chooses his shots carefully, and he’ll maintain a script for an offense with no trouble. Even if he’s forced to go off script and outside of the structure, Cordeiro is a solid answer for the Spartans in Mountain West play in 2023.”

As that website notes, Cordeiro could face competition from Jay Butterfield, who transferred in from Oregon.

Here’s a Cordeiro highlight clip on Twitter from CBS Sports Network:

Former Kaiser and UH Kicker Kyler Halvorsen Joins The Spartans

COVID-19 wiped out Kyler Halvorsen’s senior season at Kaiser in 2020.

But he went on to have two fantastic seasons kicking off for the University of Hawaii and he has since gone the way of Cordeiro — to San Jose State.

In 2021, Halvorsen averaged 64.0 yards per kickoff, ranking ninth nationally, and added 40 touchbacks.

Then, in 2022, he averaged 63.5 yards per kickoff, and he also produced 38 touchbacks, which led the Mountain West and was 15th nationally.

In this snippet from MWCconnection.com, it’s evident that San Jose was in need of improvement at the kicker position: “The biggest weakness of this team (in 2022) may have been their kicking game. The Spartans finished eleventh in both kicking and punting. For a team that was not far from contending for a conference championship, poor performances on special teams may have been the difference maker.”

Halvorsen is hoping to be kicking field goals, too, something he didn’t get to do at UH. He was 2-for-3 on field goals in the Spartans’ spring game, hitting from 40 and 41 and missing from 34.

Here is a video of him kicking field goals at a San Jose State practice:

And from last December, here’s a tweet of a Spectrum video of Halvorsen booming a kickoff against Colorado State.
