A bunch of Hawaii high school track and field athletes are off to super starts in the 2023 season this spring.

Seven athletes have surpassed or equaled the winning marks from last year’s state championships.

Those seven are:

>> Saint Louis’ Trech Kekahuna, 10.90 seconds in the 100-meter dash
>> Baldwin’s Joseph Randolph, 22.23 in the 200
>> Mililani’s Timothy Wallace, 14.89 in the 110 hurdles
>> Punahou’s John-Keawe Sagapolutele, 155 feet, 4 inches in the discus
>> Mililani’s Cal’von Baker, 6-4 in the high jump
>> King Kekaulike’s Ja’lyn Deichert, 12.44 in the 100
>> Mid-Pacific’s Destiny Look, 46.35 in the 300 hurdles

The boys 100 should be quite interesting this season. Kekahuna’s 10.9o is seven-hundredths of a second faster than the 10.97 that Randolph ran to win states last year. But Randolph’s personal best (which was not run at states) is 10.61, which is faster than the state meet record of 10.63.

Already with the top time in the 200, Randolph has a shot to take both events, but it won’t be an easy task.

Kekahuna was part of the Crusaders’ winning 4×100 relay team last season.

Some other observations:

>> Wallace’s 14.89 is less than a second away from the 110 hurdles state meet record of 14.19.

>> Two Saint Louis athletes, Bryson Pataray and Michael Joshua Price, are part of the Crusaders’ 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams that have the top times in the state so far. William Reed — the reigning high jump state champ — is part of that 4×100 unit and Kekahuna could possibly join it before or for states.

>> Moanalua’s Joshua Sanders has the top time so far in two events — the 300 hurdles and the long jump.

>> Sagapolutele, the reigning shot put and discus state champ, has the top marks so far in those two events.

>> Deichert’s 12.44 is .33 away from the state meet record of 12.01. She is also part of Na Alii’s 4×100 relay team that owns the top time in the state so far.

>> Mililani’s Deiona Carter has the top time so far in two events — the 200 and 400.

>> Punahou’s Sasha Iizuka-Sheeley has the top time so far in the 800 and is part of the Buff ‘N Blue’s 4×400 relay team that owns the best mark to date in 2023.

>> Mililani’s Zola O’Donnell is tops so far in the 1,500 and 3,000.

>> Two ‘Iolani girls, Lexi King and Alexis Fujita, are tied with the top mark so far in the high jump — 5-4. They are one and a half inches away from the state meet record of 5-5.50.

>> Roosevelt’s Tiana Burgess tops the list so far in the long jump and triple jump.

All of the track and field athletes and teams will continue through the regular season meets, the league championship events and the state championships May 5-6 at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium.

Top times or distances for all 16 boys and 16 girls events so far in 2023 follow.
