When coach Rod York was wrapping up his postgame interview after a hectic 35-34 come-from-behind win over Campbell last Friday, he pointed to two-way senior standout Gavin Hunter and said, “That’s our leader right there.”
And that fact is not too hard to notice if you watch the Trojans. He has a certain swagger and yes, indeed, he made a huge difference in the victory with four receptions, including one for a touchdown, a two-point conversion catch, six tackles and two interceptions while keeping dangerous receiver Mason Muaau out of the end zone.
For his performance, Hunter was chosen by ScoringLive.com as its Top Performer for WEEK 4.
Bedrock Sports Hawaii, instead, selected the cornerback on the other side — senior Jordan Fetu as its outstanding player for WEEK 4.
Fetu locked down on Campbell’s other star receiver, Jonah Tofagau-Tavai, for most of the night, but especially in the late stages to sew up the victory.
Fetu had a team-leading eight tackles and three pass breakups against Campbell, but more importantly, he, like Hunter, made two interceptions.
Both of those picks were at critical moments. The first came with 11:55 remaining when the Trojans trailed 28-21. The second one, with Campbell trying to regain the lead, was in Fetu’s own end zone on Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele’s 30-yard pass with 10 seconds to go.
For good measure, Fetu returned the pick 42 yards. That’s a win, right? Not so fast. A Mililani lost fumble while in victory formation, gave the Sabers two more plays. This time, they attacked Hunter’s side twice, completing a 16-yard pass to Muaau before a bomb down the right side intended for Rowen Bucao was broken up by Ezekiel Rodrigues and Hunter.
You can see those final plays, starting with Fetu’s late-game interception at about the 10:20 mark of the following HawaiiPrepWorld.com video:
Another factor for Bedrock awarding Fetu with the weekly honor was what he did to fire up his squad after his first interception. He immediately spiked the ball as hard as he could and a flurry of yellow flags came up.
Now, Bedrock is not condoning what would is a nightmare 15-yard walkout in most coaches’ minds, but it served to get the blood flowing in his teammates for the eventual rally to victory.
“We didn’t give up when we were down and they (the Sabers) were gaining the momentum,” Fetu said afterward. “None of us gave up.”
