Two online publications have reported that Hawaiian surfing legend Derek Ho is dead at 55.
According to Carve Surfing Magazine and BeachGrit.com, Ho suffered an apparent heart attack and went in a coma before dying on Friday.
Ho won the world championship in 1993 and was a four-time Vans Triple Crown of Surfing winner and a two-time Pipe Masters champion.
Ho comes from a well-known surf family. His brother is Michael, a former world-tour surfer, and he is an uncle to Mason Ho and Coco Ho — two highly regarded professional surfers currently.
Landon McNamara, a North Shore pro surfer, posted his memories of Derek Ho on Instagram on Friday night while confirming Ho’s death.
“The surfing world, and Pipeline will never be the same again,” McNamara wrote. All my love going out to all the Ho Ohana. If you need anything I’ll be there! R.I.Paradise Uncle D.”
Carve Surfing magazine posted the following on Twitter:
Ho won the Triple Crown in 1986, ’88, ’90 and ’92. Ho is from Kailua and is the first cousin of the late singer and entertainer Don Ho.
