Mid-Pacific Opts Out of Pac-Five Football For 2020-21

At least one school is not going to participate in Hawaii high school football during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

It remains to be seen if other schools will follow suit.

According to Mid-Pacific Institute Athletic Director Scott Wagner, the school will not send its players to the 2020-21 Pac-Five Wolfpack football, cheerleading and wrestling teams that are made up of numerous private schools on Oahu.

The decision was announced Monday by Mid-Pacific President Paul Turnbull and first reported in Hawaii Prep World.

Pac-Five typically gets around 20 to 25 percent of its football players from Mid-Pacific each year.

A call to Wolfpack football coach Kip Botelho was not immediately returned. Not having 20 to 25 percent of a football team’s players would obviously be cause for concern to any coach. A year ago, Pac-Five had 59 varsity players and 35 on the junior varsity.

“Schools are trying to keep kids in smaller groups through the day to minimize (a possible) exposure to the virus,” Wagner said. “Pac-Five has so many schools sending players to one combined team and that puts students at a higher risk. We will be staying away from those high contact sports for a year. All schools are looking at COVID-19 and the world we live in and doing whatever they can to keep students safe.”
