Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Chenoa Frederick is the Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the third time, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday.
Unfortunately, Frederick was unable to compete this spring in her senior year due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Last month, Frederick was one of 12 athletes picked to the Hawaii Hall of Honor, one of the most, if not the most, prestigious honors a Hawaii high school athlete can receive.
The Gatorade award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.
A 5-foot-6 senior, Frederick won eight championships in her three years competing at the state meet and she holds the state-meet record of 39 feet, 10 inches in the triple jump. She also won state titles in the 100-meter dash, high jump and long jump.
She is the first Hawaii athlete to win the Gatorade honor three times since the inception of the award in 1986.
In addition, Frederick (who carried a 3.08 grade-point average, according to a Gatorade news release) is a soccer standout for the Warriors and a peer mentor at the school. She will attend the University of Hawaii, where she will continue competing in track and field on scholarship.
“Chenoa is mentally tough and able to compete with other athletes at a very high level,” Kamehameha coach Manly Kanoa said. “She’s also kind and respectful, and she’s often seen motivating and encouraging other competitors.”
